Magic Potion Isopods — Armadillidium vulgare
Magic Potion Isopods — Armadillidium vulgare “Magic Potion”
They’re hardy, moderately prolific breeders and thrive in a semi-arid to temperate environment with good ventilation, plenty of leaf litter, decaying hardwood and access to moisture. Their beautiful white, yellow and black speckled colouring makes them a fantastic display isopod and an excellent bioactive clean-up crew. 🦎
🌍 Origin: Armadillidium vulgare is native to Europe and the Mediterranean region and is now widespread throughout the world. “Magic Potion” is a selectively bred colour morph, not a separate species or wild locality. There are both American and Japanese lines of the hobby morph.
Excellent for semi-arid to temperate bioactive enclosures, provided they have access to a consistently moist refuge while the rest of the enclosure remains relatively dry and well ventilated.
A good setup is:
- 💧 Moisture: Keep approximately ⅓ of the enclosure moist, with the remaining area noticeably drier. A moisture gradient is important for hydration and successful moulting.
- 🏜️ Semi-arid enclosure: They are particularly well suited to drier, well-ventilated setups and should not be kept in a constantly wet or waterlogged enclosure.
- 🍂 Food: Leaf litter and decaying hardwood should form the foundation of their diet. Supplement with vegetables and occasional protein such as dried shrimp or fish flakes.
- 🪵 Hides: Cork bark, decaying wood and plenty of leaf litter provide shelter and moisture-retaining areas.
- 🦴 Calcium: Provide a constant calcium source such as cuttlebone, calcium carbonate or crushed eggshell.
- 🌡️ Temperature: Approximately 18–25°C (65–77°F) is a good general range.
- 📏 Adult Size: Approximately 1.5–1.8 cm (½–¾ inch), although size can vary between the American and Japanese lines.
Magic Potions are excellent beginner-friendly display isopods. Like other Armadillidium, they can roll themselves into a tight ball when disturbed. They tend to establish at a steady pace rather than exploding in numbers like Powder Blues or Powder Oranges.
