Zebra Isopods β Armadillidium maculatum
Theyβre hardy, moderately fast-breeding isopods that thrive in a semi-arid environment with good ventilation, plenty of leaf litter, hiding places and access to moisture. Their bold black-and-white striping makes them a beautiful addition to bioactive enclosures and isopod collections. π¦π€
π Origin: Native to the Mediterranean regions of southeastern France and western Italy, including the Ligurian coast.
Excellent for semi-arid bioactive enclosures, provided they have access to a consistently moist refuge while the rest of the enclosure remains on the drier side.
A good setup is:
- π§ Moisture: Keep approximately one-third to one-half of the enclosure moist, with the remainder noticeably drier.
- ποΈ Semi-arid enclosure: Good ventilation and relatively dry surface conditions suit this Mediterranean species.
- π Food: Leaf litter and decaying hardwood should be available at all times, with occasional vegetables and a small amount of protein.
- πͺ΅ Hides: Cork bark, bark flats and leaf litter provide excellent hiding places and moisture-retaining areas.
- 𦴠Calcium: Provide a continuous calcium source such as cuttlebone or calcium carbonate.
- π‘οΈ Temperature: Approximately 18β25Β°C (65β77Β°F) is suitable for routine keeping.
- π Adult Size: Approximately 1.5β1.8 cm (Β½βΒΎ inch).
Zebra Isopods are a great choice for semi-arid and temperate bioactive enclosures. Their moisture gradient is especially importantβthe enclosure should never be completely dry, but it also shouldn't be kept uniformly damp.
