Albino — Armadillidium vulgare
$30.00
They’re hardy, adaptable and beginner-friendly isopods with a beautiful pale white to cream/amber appearance and contrasting red to reddish eyes. Albino Armadillidium vulgare make an excellent clean-up crew and are well suited to bioactive enclosures.
They do best with plenty of leaf litter, decaying hardwood, hiding places and a moisture gradient, while still benefiting from good ventilation.
- 🌍 Origin: Armadillidium vulgare is native to Europe and has been introduced throughout much of North America. The albino form is a captive-bred colour morph rather than a separate species.
- 💧 Moisture: Maintain a moisture gradient with approximately ½ of the enclosure kept moist and the other half allowed to remain drier.
- 🏜️ Semi-arid enclosure: They are relatively drought tolerant but should always have access to a reliably moist refuge.
- 🍂 Food: Leaf litter and decaying hardwood should make up the foundation of their diet. Supplement with vegetables, quality isopod food and occasional protein.
- 🪵 Hides: Cork bark, hardwood and leaf litter provide excellent shelter.
- 🦴 Calcium: Always provide a calcium source such as cuttlebone, calcium carbonate, crushed eggshell or limestone.
- 🌡️ Temperature: Approximately 20–27°C (68–81°F).
- 📏 Adult Size: Approximately 1.5–2.1 cm (½–¾ inch).
Albino A. vulgare are active, adaptable and relatively easy to keep, making them a great choice for both new and experienced isopod keepers. The albino trait has been studied genetically and is associated with recessive inheritance.
