Clown Isopods — Armadillidium klugii
Clown Isopods — Armadillidium klugii
They’re hardy, striking display isopods that thrive in a semi-arid to moderately humid environment with good ventilation, plenty of leaf litter, decaying hardwood and access to moisture. Their dark bodies with contrasting white, yellow and reddish markings make them one of the most eye-catching Armadillidium species available. 🦎🤡
🌍 Origin: Native to the eastern Adriatic and Balkan region, with documented populations particularly in coastal Croatia and Montenegro, as well as parts of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Greece. In the wild, they are found under stones, bark, leaf litter and in rocky crevices.
Excellent for semi-arid bioactive enclosures, provided they have access to a consistently moist refuge while the rest of the enclosure remains relatively dry and well ventilated. Keeping the entire enclosure wet is one of the biggest mistakes with this species.
A good setup is:
- 💧 Moisture: Keep approximately ¼–⅓ of the enclosure damp, with the remainder progressively drier. Always provide access to a moist retreat.
- 🏜️ Semi-arid enclosure: They prefer good ventilation and a genuine dry side rather than a uniformly humid enclosure.
- 🍂 Food: Leaf litter and decaying hardwood should be available at all times, supplemented with vegetables and occasional protein such as dried shrimp or fish food.
- 🪵 Hides: Cork bark, bark pieces, leaf litter and rocky-style hides provide shelter and help create the moisture gradient.
- 🦴 Calcium: Provide a constant calcium source such as cuttlebone, calcium carbonate or limestone for healthy exoskeleton development and moulting.
- 🌡️ Temperature: Approximately 22–26°C (72–79°F) is a good target, with slightly cooler temperatures at night. Avoid prolonged temperatures above 27°C (81°F).
- 📏 Adult Size: Approximately 1.5–2.1 cm (½–¾ inch), with around 2.1 cm being the documented maximum.
Clown Isopods are excellent display animals, but they're generally a slower-to-establish species than Powder Blue or Powder Orange Isopods. New cultures can take several months to really get going, so patience is important. Once established, they make a beautiful and effective clean-up crew.
Hardy • Striking markings • Excellent display species • Great clean-up crew • Intermediate care
