Dwarf Purple Isopods - Trichoniscus sp.
Product Description
Dwarf Purple Isopods are tiny, fascinating isopods known for their subtle grayish-purple to lavender colouring and their incredibly small size. They are one of the smaller isopods commonly kept in the hobby and are especially valued as a bioactive cleanup crew for humid terrariums and vivariums.
Unlike larger, surface-active isopods, Dwarf Purples spend much of their time beneath the leaf litter and within the substrate, where they feed on decaying organic material and help break down waste. Their small size also makes them particularly useful in enclosures containing small amphibians and other microfauna.
These little isopods are an excellent choice for keepers looking for a hardworking, low-profile cleanup crew that can thrive in warm, humid environments.

Characteristic Features
-
💜 Beautiful subtle colouring — their bodies can display soft gray, purple, lavender and plum tones, although they are much less brightly coloured than many larger isopod varieties.
-
🔍 Extremely small — adults are generally only around 2–4 mm, making them difficult to spot compared with larger isopods.
-
🌿 Excellent cleanup crew — they feed on decaying plant material, leaf litter and other organic matter, helping recycle nutrients within a bioactive enclosure.
-
🕳️ Fossorial by nature — Dwarf Purples spend much of their time beneath the substrate, leaf litter and other cover rather than wandering openly across the enclosure.
-
💧 Love moisture — they require consistently humid conditions and benefit from a reliably damp area containing sphagnum moss or moisture-retaining substrate.
-
🍂 Leaf litter is important — a generous supply of decomposing leaves provides both food and shelter.
-
🪨 Calcium is essential — provide a continuous calcium source such as cuttlebone, crushed eggshell or calcium-rich material to support healthy moulting and exoskeleton development.
-
🐸 Great for bioactive enclosures — their tiny size and burrowing habits make them particularly useful in humid vivariums, including those housing dart frogs and other small inhabitants.
-
🌱 Fast colony establishment — once established under suitable conditions, Dwarf Purples can reproduce readily and build a sustainable cleanup crew.
💜 Care Tip
Dwarf Purples are very small and moisture-dependent, so keeping their enclosure consistently humid is especially important. Provide a deep, moisture-retaining substrate, plenty of leaf litter and a pocket of damp sphagnum moss, while still allowing adequate ventilation. Avoid allowing the enclosure to dry completely.
Because they spend so much time underground, don't worry if you don't see them constantly. A healthy colony may be doing most of its work beneath the surface and inside the leaf litter.
