Rubber Ducky Isopods — Cubaris sp. “Rubber Ducky”

They’re highly sought-after, slow-growing specialty isopods with their unmistakable yellow “duck face” and dark body. Rubber Duckies thrive in a warm, humid environment with deep, moisture-retaining substrate, plenty of leaf litter, decaying hardwood and a reliable calcium source. They’re a beautiful display species and are best suited to keepers who can provide stable conditions and patience while a colony establishes. 🦎🦆

🌍 Origin: Rubber Duckies are widely reported from limestone cave and karst environments in northern Thailand, particularly around the Chiang Dao area. However, their exact scientific identity and verified wild distribution have not been formally established, so Cubaris sp. “Rubber Ducky” is the appropriate name rather than assigning them a species name.

Best suited to warm, humid bioactive enclosures, with a clear moisture gradient. They need consistently moist substrate but also good ventilation and should never be waterlogged.

A good setup is:

  • 💧 Moisture: Keep a broad moist area, with a smaller area that is less damp. The substrate should remain moist throughout the deeper layers but never saturated.
  • 🌿 Humidity: Approximately 75–90% humidity works well, provided there is adequate ventilation.
  • 🍂 Food: Leaf litter and decaying hardwood should always be available. Supplement with vegetables and occasional protein such as dried shrimp, fish flakes or suitable isopod food.
  • 🪵 Hides & substrate: Provide deep, organic substrate—around 8–10 cm (3–4 inches)—with plenty of leaf litter, rotten hardwood, cork bark and moss. They are burrowing isopods and will spend considerable time beneath the surface.
  • 🦴 Calcium: Provide a constant calcium source such as limestone, cuttlebone or calcium carbonate. Their limestone-associated habitat makes calcium particularly important.
  • 🌡️ Temperature: Approximately 22–26°C (72–79°F) is a good target. Avoid prolonged temperatures above 27–28°C (81–82°F).
  • 📏 Adult Size: Approximately 1.2–1.8 cm (½–¾ inch).

Rubber Duckies are slow to establish compared with Powder Blues, Powder Oranges and Dairy Cows, so patience is important. They can spend a lot of time hidden beneath bark and substrate, particularly when the colony is small. They're better considered a specialty display species than a high-output clean-up crew.

Warm & humid • Highly sought-after • Unique markings • Excellent display species • Slow-growing
