🀍 Snow White Isopods β€” Porcellio laevis β€œSnow White”

They’re hardy, highly prolific breeders and thrive in a moderately humid environment with good ventilation, plenty of leaf litter, decaying hardwood and access to moisture. Their striking pure-white colouring makes them a beautiful display isopod as well as an excellent clean-up crew and supplemental feeder. 🦎🀍

🌍 Origin: Porcellio laevis is associated with North Africa and the Mediterranean region and has become widespread in many parts of the world. The Snow White is a captive-bred colour morph, rather than a separate species or wild locality.

Excellent for humid to moderately dry bioactive enclosures, provided they have access to a consistently moist refuge while the remainder of the enclosure is allowed to stay drier.

A good setup is:

  • πŸ’§ Moisture: Maintain a clear moisture gradient, with a damp area available at all times and the remainder of the enclosure less moist. Avoid keeping the entire enclosure saturated.
  • 🌿 Humidity: Moderate humidity with good ventilation works well. Around 50–70% ambient humidity is commonly recommended.
  • πŸ‚ Food: Leaf litter and decaying hardwood should always be available. Supplement with vegetables and protein-rich foods such as fish flakes, dried shrimp or suitable isopod food.
  • πŸͺ΅ Hides: Cork bark, decaying wood and a generous layer of leaf litter provide shelter and help maintain the moisture gradient.
  • 🦴 Calcium: Provide a constant calcium source such as cuttlebone, crushed eggshell or calcium carbonate to support healthy growth and moulting.
  • 🌑️ Temperature: Approximately 20–26Β°C (68–79Β°F) is a good general range.
  • πŸ“ Adult Size: Approximately 2 cm (ΒΎ inch), with some individuals reaching around 2.5 cm.

Snow White Isopods are excellent beginner-friendly isopods because they are adaptable, active and reproduce readily. Like other Porcellio laevis, they have a strong appetite and benefit from regular supplemental protein, particularly in larger, growing colonies.
